Big LOL at a Linux old-timer (i.e. myself)

,----[ Quote ]
| I’ve just had a big LOL at myself today. I bought a small Bamboo Wacom
| tablet, brought it home and plugged into my Linux box. First impression: it’s
| good. Tablet was recognized as a mouse, I could move cursor and click things
| but, well, GIMP didn’t like it as a damn tablet. [...] Maybe my old habits
| just don’t apply to modern Linux times when things Just Work? Automagically?
| I rebooted (I know, I could’ve just killed X) with tablet connected and
| voila! everything Just Works.
|
| Fuck!
|
| LOL!
|
| Happiness :)
|
| That happens when you’re just so used to manually configuring things that you
| just don’t think that free software is up to the task of applying
| AutoMagic(tm) and everything Just Works :D

What is with the all Linux users?

,----[ Quote ]
| Recently I asked in the OpenLife chat channel if anyone had any experience
| with Ubuntu. After looking into the easier to use flavors of Linux versions
| it seemed like a good choice for a beginner like me. Osiris Indigo told me he
| uses it at work and home. He gave me pointers on the install and after
| chatting with him about it some it looked like a great idea.
|
| So, I reinstalled Windows XP and afterward installed Ubuntu to allow the
| option of dual booting between the two as the need arises. Folks.. I am in
| love. Just to give you an example, the windows install took about an hour
| including hunting down the drivers, reboots, etc. That did not include the
| updates to the OS, just the initial installs. Ubuntu took about oh, 10 mins
| tops. It worked with all my hardware with the exception of the super shiny
| mode that required the video card driver update. No hunting around for that
| one, Ubuntu found it on the web and installed it for me. Off I went..

Yesterday:

Drivers? Don’t talk to me about drivers

,----[ Quote ]
| Yet again, I butted up against the supposed ease of installation and
| configuration of Windows (in this case, XP). I passed a ThinkPad T40 on to a
| friend of mine and, because he’s all thumbs when it comes to computers
| (except for using certain software), I offered to help him install XP.
|
| [...]
|
| What the????
|
| There was no audio. No ethernet. And, most importantly, no wireless. The
| hardware wasn’t recognized, and didn’t appear in the device manager. So much
| for auto detection and plug-and-play. And this was a ThinkPad. Good old IBM
| hardware. Not strange, non-standard components from some obscure firm
| somewhere.
|
| [...]
|
| The Ubuntu experience
|
| A while back, I installed Ubuntu on exactly the same hardware. Well, not
| exactly — the hard drive on that ThinkPad was a 40 GB model. And guess what?
| Ubuntu automatically detected my hardware. Ethernet, wireless, audio … they
| all worked without me having to go into a repository or download and compile
| a driver. They just worked.
