Perhaps. At best, the market is ignorant (which is true
enough; does Joe Sixpack have time to read all of the
latest and greatest information from the Linux camp?),
and at worst, Microsoft is guilty as charged of every
crime catalogued in such spots as groklaw, manipulating
the market for its own gain to the detriment of innovation
everywhere, destroying competitors (hello? Netscape?
4DOS? Digital Research? Lotus? Well, the first and
last survived by mutating or being swallowed, I suppose),
making apparently significant "innovations" that are little
more than warmed-over crud from competitors, and flooding
ad channels with junk (raise your hands if you remember
the 2005 MS SQL "battery" campaign).

I'll admit to wondering if Standard Oil was guilty of
foisting off high-sulfur "sour" crude as the sweet stuff,
but that's not all that accurate an analogy for this mess.
