GPL Project Watch List for Week of 06/20/08

,----[ Quote ]
| In 9 days, the GPL v3 will have been out for a whole year, and our group will
| also hit its anniversary. This week we have passed 3000 GPL v3/LGPL v3/AGPL
| v3 projects, 3009 to be exact. Individually, the GPL v3 count is at 2648 GPL
| v3 projects, up 56 projects from last week.

Plurkair: A Basic, Open Source Desktop Client For Plurk

,----[ Quote ]
| The code for Plurkair will also be released under the GPL v3 public license.
| ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
| I haven’t uploaded it to Google Code yet, but it will be there in the next 24
| hours. Coding it was remarkably simple, and I look forward to playing with
| the API for future versions, although Loic Lemeur coming out and offering
| Plurk support with Twhirl would be my preferred choice.

GPLv3 on the advance

,----[ Quote ]
| According to Palamida, there are now 109 projects under the Affero General
| Public License (AGPL). This too sprang up under the aegis of the Free
| Software Foundation, and is extending the concept of software distribution to
| Software as a Service (SaaS). Applications offered in this ever more popular
| way are also subject to an obligation to release their source code in
| accordance with the GPL's copyleft regulations, if they contain GPL code. The
| Funambol mobile synchronization service is one of the most prominent
| representatives of this class of software.

GPLv3 needed at this stage. Free software can't be easily defeated based on
merit (not long-term anyway); litigious obstacles are a different story.

Red Hat Makes History With Patent Settlement - Compatible with GPLv3

,----[ Quote ]
| Here's what Eben Moglen says about the agreement:
|
|       "Red Hat’s settlement of outstanding patent litigation on terms that
provide
|          additional protection to other members of the community upstream and
|          downstream from Red Hat is a positive contribution to the resources
|          for community patent defense. We would hope to see more settlements
|          of this kind–in which parties secure more than their own particular
|          legal advantage in relation to the third-party patent risk of the
|          whole FOSS community–when commercial redistributors of FOSS choose
|          to settle  patent litigation. SFLC welcomes Red Hat’s efforts on the
|          community’s behalf."

Novell needed this lesson

,----[ Quote ]
| This is what the Novell/Microsoft secret pact should have been - instead of
| throwing the rest of the open source community under the bus, Novell should
| have pushed for broader coverage and been open about it all. Look and learn
| Novell, don't be so slimy and see how the a real leader operates.
