Verily I say unto thee, that Roy Schestowitz spake thusly:

It's a chain reaction.

. Proprietary software vendors fail to stimulate the market (e.g.
  Vista)
. Customers grow ever more tired of the upgrade treadmill (updated
software that "needs" updated hardware that "needs" updated software
that "needs" ...), especially when it reaps so little rewards at such
  a high cost
. OEM's business success starts to wane
. OEM's make a desperate leap of faith, break increasingly unprofitable
ties of exclusivity with coercive vendors, and dare to actually /ask/
  customers what they want
. To the apparent shock of the industry, customers demand GNU/Linux
. GNU/Linux vendors step up to the plate, offer their services
. OEM's forge alliances with GNU/Linux vendors
. Customer's then demand better hardware support
. OEM's collaborate with hardware manufacturers for better GNU/Linux
  support

What next?

. EU antitrust commission opposes the coercive "bundling" of Microsoft
Windows by default. Set's legal precedent
. Level playing field accomplished
. Customers realise the futility of requesting the proprietary Windows
system, given its cost, insecurity, instability, and restrictions
. World plus dog begins adopting Open Standards almost exclusively
. The concept of Operating System becomes irrelevant. Interoperability
is an accepted way of life. All formats, protocols, services and
software are Open and accessible to /all/
. An IT commerce revolution erupts, moving radically from corporatism to
a Free Market Economy, allowing many more vendors to compete on an
equal footing. Many more, and more innovative, products and services
result. The IT industry is no longer held back
. The market transforms from being IP oriented to being a customer
  oriented SOA
. Everyone wins ... except the greedy monopolists, who become extinct -
as dinosaurs are destined to do

Mission accomplished.
