[News] PCMag: Baby's First Laptop Runs Linux

Baby's First Laptop

,----[ Quote ]
| One of my daughter's toddler friends already has a laptop--his
| parents' cast-off--running Edubuntu, a Linux-based OS made for
| kids. Edubuntu comes with kiddie educational applications,
| including one that mimics the legendary Kid Pix, a truly awesome
| children's drawing program that dates back to the 1990s. (Kid Pix,
| I'm happy to say, is still going strong; you can buy the new version
| for $25 for Windows or Mac machines.) The little guy just bangs on
| keys to make sounds, but he'll grow into it. His parents, meanwhile,
| are getting new life out of their old laptop, because it runs
| Firefox and OpenOffice--and runs them quite competently.

| If you own an older computer (Pentium 2 or newer) and have a few
| hours free one weekend you can build your children a great computer
| so that they can play educational games and do their school work.
| Now you can finally have your computer back.

Have you try Linux?

,----[ Quote ]
| Two years later, I got the idea of introducing my daughter to the
| computer world. She is just two years old and I am not up to
| investing any money for her to break a computer.
|
| I got used computer from my brother-in-law, I had a keyboard and
| mouse, and the only thing I purchased was an old used monitor for
| $20.00. I cleaned out the hard drive and install Ubuntu Linux,
| Ubuntu is a great Linux distribution that lets you customized
| everything to the point that you feel so comfortable with
| your machine.

Edubuntu - A real life experiment - Linux and a 9 year old

,----[ Quote ]
| With a Dell Celeron, 256MB Ram and basic integrated graphics, Dawn and
| I struggled with what to do for Andy'y computer. After deciding Vista
| was not an option, and that it just wasn't a good investment to throw
| $100 worth of ram into a $250 computer, we decided to look to Linux.
| Dawn and I have both been playing with Linux quite a bit lately, so
| we felt comfortable giving it a go.

Out of the mouth of babes: Linux is Better

| When I asked my son why he had snatched my laptop instead of using the
| family PC, he replied without hesitation: "Because Linux is better."

Young, poor also ought to upload

,----[ Quote ]
| The machine - formerly known as the $100 laptop - has an integrated
| screen, keyboard and video camera. It requires less than 10 percent
| of the power of standard machines and wirelessly links to other OLPC
| machines to form a "mesh network" that can connect inexpensively to
| the Internet.
|
| What it doesn't have is any software made by Microsoft, a choice
| that reportedly made Bill Gates very bitter and presumably
| exacerbated the anxiety he and his company feel about their place
| in the future of computing. Instead, OLPC has chosen to use an
| open-source Linux operating system.

Welcome To "Kids Without"

,----[ Quote ]
| This organization was founded in Helena, MT on Oct. 3, 2006 with one simple
| goal in mind. To provide computers to families who can't afford them while
| recycling used computer hardware which is donated directly to the
| organization... You would be suprised.... After testing the hardware we
| pop in a CD with http://edubuntu.org on it.... Then when the system
| boots.... The machine is tested by my kids and if it passes this check list
| it's ready to be distributed....

Mandriva One Not the Linux Dinosaur of Old

,----[ Overview ]
| I found early versions of Linux weren't very user-friendly, so this
| time around, I used my 7-year-old son as my test subject. I gave him a
| little lesson on how to use Mandriva One and off he went. On his own, he
| was able to boot up the machine and get himself online to his favorite
| kid Web sites without any problems at all -- meaning today's Linux has
| a short learning curve.

Linux Isn't Just For Grownups Anymore

,----[ Quote ]
| In about a year, through a public school grant program, State of
| Indiana education officials have moved at least 22,000 students
| from Windows-based desktops to Linux-based desktops. That ledM
| icrosoft to hold up a study by IDC's Government Insights unit...
