I posted not long ago about how home web servers seem to have gone a bit out
of fashion. It's one of those things where we did it when we shouldn't
because our lines were slow on dialup, but we don't do it now when we
could, with our fast lines and permanently on connections.

Probably the main reason people don't bother is because web hosting is
cheap, simple and reliable (if you go for the big names).

So much as I admire the fact that you want to host your own, I agree with
Roy in that you should select a good host and do it that way.

Top of my personal list of reccomended hosts is http://www.ocssolutions.com
the hosting its solid and reliable, cpanel is a nice way to control your
space, with some very good 'Fantastico' applications, so Kirsty could have
her web pages up very quickly. You also get mysql/postgresql, ruby rails,
php, a very good range of Perl modules (I don't think I have ever seen such
an extensive range of modules on a host). Then with ssh command line login
and sftp, it is a nice quick way to control/update your space from your
Linux client.

I have pointed loads of people to Ocssolutions and haven't had any of them
grumble at me.

I would have liked to reccomend a UK based host for you, but it is a real
struggle to find one that offers proper ssh commandline, unless you go for
Virtual host. Commandline access makes life loads easier.
