Some hardcore users prefer using tools that automatically compile the latest
and greatest source code, but distributions which the vast majority of
people use rely on software that either:

* resides on the distribution's installation CDs;

OR

* is packaged and made available for download from a Web site (the 'Windows
way');

OR

* resides on the distribution's repository, i.e. is located on the server (or
mirror) of the distribution's provider where it is maintained and tested.
The advantage of this approach is that you have /trusted/ software all in a
single place, you can search for software packages (programs), and you can
install a lot of different applications (and update them) in one fell swoop.

Which distribution have you had in mind? There is no single version that
suits everyone, so it's worth studying.
