I compiled Octave a month ago, having collected many resources and links to
Open Source alternatives. I didn't take it further because I have not coded
in MATLAB for a while. It doesn't appear like I'll be staying in academia.
There are opportunities elsewhere which open the door to creativity.

Earlier today I read that Scilib had been added to the repositories of
Mandriva 2007. Both have French roots, I suspect. What's more, it's nice to
see scientific software intersecting with GNU/Linux where it belongs (and
where it enjoys a symbiotic relationship).
