OSDL is funded by giants such as IBM and Intel. These companies want
something in return for their investment. A formal auditing process gives
them legal coverage, as well as confidence in the packages they deploy
in-house, as well as customers' computer base. Debian is extremely popular
among servers.

Look at the bright side, Chris. We get all this auditing for free. It
improves the quality of the product which we benefit from at no expense. I,
for one, am always happy when software which I use is improved at somebody
else's expense, for his/her/their benefit, as well as mine. That's what
community-driven software development is all about. Software is duplicable,
which is the motive and raison d'être for the whole damn thing.

I wonder how the closed-source, proprietary and commercial paradigm ever
emerged in the first place. Wikipedia says it is Bill Gates who started the
whole hoi polloi, arguing that closed-source would encourage the creation of
good software (*cough* Internet Explorer).

Best wishes,

Roy
