With Ubuntu 4 (don't ask), my HP scanner worked without any setups. Just open
XSane after distro installation and all works. Press acquire and Ubuntu will
know which device it needs to handshake with. How they do it is beyond me
(in a sense)...
In SUSE 8.1 and 9.3, on the contrary, one has to go into YaST2 and select the
scanner from a list... might only be hard if you install it remotely, having
never seen the attached scanner or probed it. It's also possible to install
Linux (kernel) without physical access to the machine, which is important in
the case of datacentres and overseas administration. Google seem to be doing
plenty of that...
