Not surprised you have trouble with Linspire - it's a law unto itself!
Is it still using LILO?
I have had no problems at all using GRUB (SUSE, SLED, ubuntu, etc.) and
multiple boots - i.e. several distros on the same drive. Stay away from
the Linspire drive though - getting *that* to play nicely in a multi-boot
with other distros isn't for the likes of us, mate!
