I don't know how long it has been user-friendly. There is nothing to indicate
that performance has been improved though.
How much of an improvement is there from the Xorg -> Ati binary drivers?
There seems to be an improvement, but nothing very substantial. The
main advantage as far as I can tell is that dpms turns my laptop screen
off by default. There should be a way to do this using Xorg and the
kernel lcd drivers, but I haven't found the magic yet.
Also, if ATI does open source their binary drivers, it would benefit the
BSDs as well, as there is still no driver for BSD (except Xorg, but that
works for all unices, not just Linux).
